Join our crew!
As part of our team of captains, you will be responsible for navigating our vessels through the beautiful waters of Lake Superior, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of each guest that steps aboard.
Core to our business is the belief that the world is joyfully brimming with wonder and beauty; that sailing is a celebration of that joy, a near-perfect mode of travel that shows the earth and its fantastical features at its very best. We expect each of our captains to be capable of opening the doors of sailing to each person that steps aboard, to make it accessible, safe, and enjoyable. Though our boats are capable of being sailed by the captain alone, we prefer when guests are involved in nearly every step of the process, creating memories and connections that last a lifetime.
A large portion of the feedback we get from clients is that our trips are the best parts of people’s vacations, and we work hard to make that happen, from the cleanliness of the boats to the attention and professionalism that we ask from our captains. As a captain, you wear more than just the hat of a sailor – you’re an educator, a guide, a local expert, an excellent listener, a natural historian, and so much more. We expect a lot from our captains, and give them the support, resources, and education to perform their very best.
Payment:
We offer contract and employee positions. Employees start at $20/hr, with more possible depending on experience. Overtime & guaranteed work is available for employee captains. Contractor pay is as follows:
- 2.25 hr trip: $100
- 5.5 hr trip: $200
- 8 hr trip: $300
- Overnight trip: $350/day
Both employees and contractors may set their own hours, and we release our full-summer work schedules in mid to late April.
Work Experience
Our ideal captains have a true passion for sailing and education, passing on the wonder and joy of the wind and water to each person that steps on the boat. While we prefer captains to come in with a base-level sailing knowledge, we can offer education and training to help bridge gaps.
- Must have a USCG Six-Pack Great Lakes or greater
- Some sailing skills or knowledge – we can offer education to some degree
- Background in education or guiding preferred but not required
- Excellent customer service skills
- Commitment to safety of vessel and passengers
